Nap Time
As required by the State of New Hampshire, children who attend five or more hours a day are given an opportunity to sleep or rest. The children are transitioned to nap time after lunch. We are required to allow children time to fall asleep and awaken at their own pace withing the block of time set aside as nap or rest time. In the Pre-K, this is 1:00 – 2:30; in our younger groups, 12:30 – 3:00. Children who do not fall asleep after 30 minutes are offered quiet activities to do. A child who is still awake after an additional 30 minutes may get up and play quietly. Each child is given his/her own mat to be used for the school year. Parents are asked to supply either a bedroll or a crib-sized fitted sheet and a blanket of adequate size for covering and cuddling the child (Fleece is very cozy). A low pillow or soft toy for a sleep companion is welcome provided it aids in sleep and is not a distraction. The bedding will be sent home each week for laundering. Older children, including Kindergartners who arrive at lunch time, are given a quiet rest period during which they may sleep, rest or do quiet activities on their blankets. Depending upon their needs, Kindergartners may have quiet playtime at the tables. For our Kindergarten and Pre-K children, we encourage the use of "Busy Bags" brought from home that contain materials such as stickers, coloring or activity books, small games and jigsaw puzzles that are quietly engaging during rest time.
Child Care Licensing allows a reduction in staff (by one) in the nap room as long as the following conditions are met:
- The total number of child care staff required to maintain all ratios are on the premises
- More than half of the children in the room are asleep
- Rooms with reduced staff have two-way communication with other staff
- There is a nap time safety plan on file and available for review
