Meals and Snacks
Meal times are a relaxing time to refuel, to nourish and to socialize!
See “What to Bring” for lunch and snack times in your child’s schedule.
We have a “peanut and tree nut-free” policy because of the growing number of children with allergies. Please label peanut butter substitutes as such.
We realize that many parents enjoy the convenience of disposable containers. We strongly encourage the use of refillable containers to reduce refuse and the wasting of food and drink. Reusable containers allow you to know what and how much has been consumed and are much more cost-effective than disposables. Children learn about the importance of not wasting food. Reusable containers also allow you to have a conversation with your child about why a particular food wasn't eaten which can help with meal planning. We encourage children to finish foods that are not in resealable containers. We also do our best to send home uneaten portions of food. However, be advised that there will definitely be more waste and more expense with disposables. Juice boxes and pouches must be thrown away if not finished, so if you choose to use them, please send one for each meal/snack. Please know that this policy implies no criticism of those who choose to use disposables.
We are happy to help open containers, but ask that all foods are ready to eat. This includes peeling fruits and boiled eggs, and cutting foods into small or thin pieces if necessary to avoid choking. "Baby" carrots should be cut the long way and grapes and tomatoes cut in half. The only exception is for school-age children who attend after school. Please be cognizant of the potential hazards and instruct your school-age child, as we do, to eat carefully, take small bites and chew thoroughly. And, importantly, no raucous laughter or roughhousing during eating times.
The State of New Hampshire requires all children in licensed programs to have nutritionally balanced meals. Fruits and vegetables, protein, carbohydrates and dairy should be included daily with a variety of healthy choices for your child.
Please do not include the following for health and safety reasons:
- All nut products
- Candy
- Whole baby carrots, grapes and tomatoes
- Whole cheese sticks
- Hot dogs, whole or "coins"
- Popcorn
- Fruit Roll-Ups and gummy "fruit" snacks
- Glass containers
If a child is sent to school without lunch or snack(s), the parent will be notified with a phone call. We have a modest supply of non-perishable snacks on hand to provide as necessary. However, our expectation is that the parent would return with the forgotten items.
